Agape Children's Home"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat..." Mt. 25:35
Caring for the children of India
India has a population of 1.1 billion people. Nearly half are children under the age of 14. The majority of India 's children live in rural villages where life is difficult. Nearly 12 percent of all children born in India will not live to their first birthday. Since its inception, child care has been an integral part of ACM's mission. Agape Children’s Home is serving with a vision to give full care for orphaned and destitute children in Christ's love and a family atmosphere. These children are cared for through the generous contributions of friends, churches, and charity aid organizations. We work hard to provide all the essentials for a healthy childhood: a clean home, nutritional meals, proper medical attention, daily education, play and recreation. Agape Home for Children is a place of joy that replaces a former place of unhappiness and despair in these children's lives. The Home was started on April 1, 2006, and today 52 children (boys & girls) ages 5 - 16 are given full care. Our vision does not stop here at our mission in Salem. We see the needs of children in villages throughout our district, and we are responding to God's call to reach them and their family’s where they live. By the end of 2012, we wish to give full care to 100 children through child sponsorship. We welcome special donations for children to buy cots, mattresses, bed sheets, pillows, a television, musical instruments, bicycles, package for picnics and building projects. CHILD SPONSORSHIP QUESTIONS
May I send a birthday or Christmas gift to my sponsored child?
Unfortunately, due to high costs of shipping, high import duties, and restrictions by the Indian government, please do not send large packages to India. The good news is that you can send small, flat and inexpensive items. Here are some small items that children often enjoy from their sponsors: stickers, bookmarks, picture postcards, small notebooks, drawings by your children or grandchildren, and photographs.
You can also consult with us about other gifts that can be purchased locally for a small amount and given to your sponsored child in India. If you have any questions about these guidelines or a specific item, please feel free to ask us. Gifts available include: sponsoring a birthday party, Christmas/Easter dinner for child, Christmas/Easter dinner for an entire home, cricket bat & ball (boys), football (boys), hair accessories (girls), necklaces (girls), jump ropes (girls), water bottles, Bibles, stationary items (pens, pencils, erasers, rulers, etc.), snacks boxes, special clothing items for boys, special clothing items for girls, craft kits for girls, and board games for girls/boys.
How will my sponsored child communicate with me?
Your sponsored child will write to you at least three times a year, and we will include an updated picture of the child. Remember that many children only know Tamil, so their letters (and yours) will be translated. Also, remember that many children are quite young, so letter writing and paintings may be assisted by an adult. (You will receive the original letter written by the child along with the translation.)
May I write letters to my sponsored child?
Yes, you can write letters and send pictures, coloring pages, bookmarks, cards and balloons. They love to draw pictures for you, and they value and treasure any communication they receive from you. Sponsors and sponsored children alike come to understand and value one another’s country, culture, and family.
Can I visit my sponsored child?
Yes, you can visit your sponsored child. ACM has guest accommodations for visitors. If you are interested in visiting, please contact Pastor Rajan directly at acm.india@yahoo.com.
What is the length of sponsorship?
Our hope is that over a liftimeyou will come to treasure the relationship you establish with your sponsored child. We encourage a minimum one year of sponsorship, and maximum until the child reaches 17 years of age (or until the child finishes higher secondary school level). When the children have completed their basic education, they are encouraged to go into higher education or vocational trainings. If you wish, you can continue to sponsor them for their higher studies.
What is the accountability structure?
Agape Christian Mission is registered in India as a non-profitable religious and charitable organization, licensed to receive funds from foreign countries. ACM is audited annually by a third party auditor and approved by the board of directors. On request we give our yearly auditing statement to the sponsors and donors. For any clarification please write to acm.india@yahoo.com.
